Smoker/Ace might be redundant but it's too perfect to pass up
Title: Hauntings
Word count: 299
Pairing: Smoker Ace
Topic: Haunting
Summary: After Alabasta, Ace is being haunted by smoke and Smoke is being haunted by fire
He wouldn't notice immediately when it happened. It would stay with him for a few minutes gently teasing him and growing stronger until it seemed to surround him and drift in through the cracks in his pores. But the minute Ace realized that the smoke was creeping up on him again it would stop trying to encircle him and just disappear.
It haunted his every move.
He was pure fire himself, and when he incinerated things there was only only pure ash, no smoke. The fire was too pure, too hot for smoke. So where was the smoke coming from, was it just in his mind?
***
Smoker tried to ignore the extra sparks when he lit up cigars. The fire that seemed to flare brighter than ever before. And now it seemed to call to him. When he doused fire with smoke to prevent villages from burning down the fire seemed to beg with him, plead to not be forced to go away. It was reaching a point where no matter how he ignored it he wanted to soothe the fire, embrace it but not smother it out, which was thoroughly distracting.
What could make fire act that way? Was Smoker losing his grip on reality or was the pirate brat nearby?
The marine captain seemed to be too warm of late. At first he'd been willing to assume it was just a rash of warm-weathered islands but even at a winter island his jacket seemed to be too warm. And yet despite overheating from the inside out, fire seemed to be a more comfortable temperature than ever before. Soothing, warm, perfect even.
But it was better to just ignore that too so he tucked it into a corner of his mind where it kept right on haunting him.
