Card Games

Title: Card Games
Rating: PG
Word Count: 291
Pairing: None (Luffy/Nakama?)
Topic: Unsaid (it KIND OF fits)
Summary: Because if life deals you a shitty hand, cheat.
A/N: (Warnings for Luffy angst. D:) I wanted to write something more subtle, considering the topic kind of called for that kind of thing but… uh. I phailed. Have some very straight-forward angst instead.

Luffy knows he’s been dealt a shitty hand, knows that somehow there’s a more difficult side to all the laughter.

He remembers, after all; despite the blankness of his face and the guilelessness in his laugh, he still has mind enough to know. He’s been dealt a bad hand. He can’t contest that.

He still remembers the ache of his grandfather’s fist on his temple, warm and rough and full of expectations he was of no mind to meet. He can taste the blood in his mouth again and again and again, the bitter tang of a childhood buried in excuses.

He remembers Ace’s hugs where his grandfather’s were lacking; remembers warm nights of whispered dreams and teasing laughter as they faced the world one step at a time together, always together. But only until dreams grew and filled voids they’d never felt. Only until Ace left in search of his own family, ripping open wounds and abandonment issues a mile long.

A missing father. A mother he couldn’t be bothered to remember. Makino, who made sure he was fed. Shanks, who made sure he was alive.

They were all pieces of a puzzle he wasn’t sure he was smart enough to put together. It was all so confusing and daunting.

Small wonder that he just decided to go out and find his own pieces. He’d become good at stealing cards from other hands.

The shapely pieces of his Nami and Robin.

The long, angular piece of his Sanji.

The small, odd pieces of his Usopp and Chopper.

The large, brand new piece of his Franky.

And, of course, the sharp, sturdy piece of his Zoro.

He was going to make his One Piece.

Even if, sometimes, the memories still stung.

You managed to touch on all the psychological issues that I have also perceived in Luffy, and you did it very, very well. I think that people sometimes sell Luffy short with regards to the complexity of his character, and it's nice to see such a skillful exploration. If he lived in our world, he be would on some heavy ADHD medication and in counseling for his abandonment issues, if you ask me. :P

He can taste the blood in his mouth again and again and again, the bitter tang of a childhood buried in excuses.

This sentence is just made of win. It's so elegant and emotive--it almost made cry.

So yeah, awesome job. Thanks for the great read.

Short and lovely, meaning that there isn't much need for detailed analysis or extended paragraphs for the reader to understand what goes on in Luffy's mind. He's more in depth than most people think, your drabble is just like Luffy. That's how he perceives things: short and simple. Lovely depiction of each of our captain's nakama's beloved "pieces".
