Title: Those Not Among Us

Marco stood leaning against the solid oak wall of the infirmary, the same sleepy expression as always on his face. He looked unconcerned and unaffected like what he was seeing didn’t disturb him. Looked being the key word here, appearances can be deceiving. Glancing around Marco looked from where Jozu was covered in blankets and shivering his feet stuck in a bucket of hot water as he tried to recover from being defrosted to where a nurse was bathing Vista’s numerous cuts from his duel with Mihawk in antiseptic before wrapping them in clean linen bandages. He cringed inwardly in sympathy as the nurse came to a partially nasty cut on Vista’s side where the famed black blade had cut in deep. He’d like to be able to say this was what disturbed him. Watching his comrades…his brothers lying in the infirmary sick and weak but it wasn’t. What hurt him the most was who wasn’t there. The loss of his Pop hit hard, but what hurt the most was Ace. When he’d been up on deck he could almost imagine that Ace was down in the infirmary wearing the cocky grin and swearing up and down his was fine and all he needed was some food and a good nap. Could pretend that the fire he loved so much was still burning brightly instead of being ash strewn across the ground at the feet of that bastard Akainu. But that’s all it was pretend and Marco was left with wounds that a stay in an infirmary and even his phoenix powers couldn’t heal and he felt tears prickle at his eyes once more as he slipped back out the infirmary door.
