The small cabin smelled wrong, gut-churningly wrong. Blood and seared flesh, with an underlying miasma of ammonia and ether. Ben swallowed deeply, bile burning his throat as he eased into the room. Shanks was still unconscious, lying propped up on his bed against a mound of pillows. The town's doctor was just packing his bag, implements sharp and potentially deadly even in the hands of a man dedicated to saving life.
He hadn't been able to stay in the room when the physician had declared it necessary to cauterize the remains of Shanks' arm. He understood the necessity; Shanks was bleeding, had already lost far too much blood. Lucky Roo and Yassop had pinned the captain to his bed as the doctor held the cherry-red iron brand to the stump. Shanks had remained blessedly still, nearly comatose from pain and the loss of so much life blood. The smell permeated the room, and Ben wrinkled his nose, gorge rising again. He opened the small porthole, letting the ocean air enter. He sat down gingerly on the bed, one hand reaching out to ease red strands of hair back from his captain's face. A thumb pad stroked gently over the lines of pain wrinkling the formerly smooth brow. He sighed deeply.
Everything had changed for Shanks, but he knew the man would act as if he had not lost anything. He'd have to go speak to the crew, let them know to treat Shanks exactly the same, or the captain would go crazy. He rose to leave, relaxing a little as he realized the slight breeze was filling the room with the scent of the sea. Normalcy would return to the ship, just like the cabin was starting to smell as it should
