Title: White Shirt, Straw Hat

“Hey Zoro, how come you wear shirts just like this all the time?” Luffy asked, plucking at the white fabric. Zoro looked down at the hand on his shoulder and the boy it was attached to. He was wearing that innocently curious expression; the one Zoro never learned how to say no to.

 

“It…reminds me of someone.” He tried to roll over, but Luffy draped himself over Zoro, pinning him down, and looked him in the eyes, arms folded over his chest.

 

“Who?” he asked, smiling. Zoro didn’t want to talk about it; he never did. But…the face…nrgh.

 

“Her name was Kuina.” Luffy wrapped his arms around Zoro’s neck and rested his chin on the older boy’s chest.

 

“She’s dead now?”

 

“Yeah,” Zoro said, after a moment. “Yeah, she’s dead now.”

 

“Was she your friend?”

 

“Yeah.” He smiled. “She was my friend. She used to fight with me, for practice. She beat me every time.”

Luffy propped himself up and stared at Zoro in shock. “She beat you?”

 

“Yep. 2,001 times.” Luffy’s eyes widened, his jaw dropping open. Zoro smirked. “She was really something.”

 

“And you wear that shirt because it reminds you of her?” Luffy asked, settling back down.

 

“Yeah. She used to wear one just like it. I know it doesn’t really make sense, but…” He searched for words, staring at the ceiling. “I guess it’s like, every time I see my reflection, I can think of her. You know?”

 

Luffy grinned and tugged on the brim of his hat. “Yeah, I know.”

 

Zoro blinked. “Oh. Right, of course you do.” He smiled and pulled the hat down over Luffy’s eyes. Luffy laughed and gave Zoro blind, sloppy kiss before readjusting his hat and snuggling closer.

 

“You know…I bet she’d like you,” Zoro said, and closed his eyes.
