Title: Storm Under the Calm
Topic: panic
Word Count: 300
Rating: PG-14
Pairing: Zoro/Sanji; with a side of Lu/Uso and Na/Ro if you squint
Disclaimer: Characters and setting? Not mine. Not even the set-up. Again.
Summary: Sanji meets a cannon ball. Zoro causes a commotion. This one's based off
cptn_shinigami's drabble. *resolves to get original, real soon now, really*
Excuse:
cptn_shinigami wrote this lovely drabble, and then
yuki_kokoro mentioned a Zoro-POV of it. I kinda agreed, so... I sorta wrote it. Yeah. Unauthorized, again, and in lieu of a proper reply comment, again. Dang it, you guys, see what you made me do?
~~~
It was the sound, the guttering rumbling, that alerted him.
Zoro nearly tripped over Kitetsu (and his final, just-finished, opponent), trying to get a look at what had deflected the cannon ball.
At Sanji, crumpling brokenly to the deck.
At the others, their fights over, slowly gathering around the fallen cook.
Luffy and Usopp stood close, too close together in the face of trauma. Nami's hands fluttered at her sides, birds fettered by uncertainty. Robin's gaze was troubled.
Sanji, though... What was he thinking when he... Zoro didn't remember getting there, only that Sanji was looking up, now, instead of at the shattered bloody ruin of his arm, and that was better, much better.
"Look at me, stupid bastard. Look at me now."
"But..."
Sanji's head turned against Zoro's hand, trying to look again, and when had he grabbed the idiot's chin? He tightened his grip to firmly unyielding, let his fingers stay loose enough to not bruise the other's delicate skin, urged the blue eyes to meet his gaze again.
"No 'but's. Look at me."
Chopper's approach barely registered, but the flinch in Sanji's eyes as the bone was set did. No-one else would have seen it, nor the way Sanji's pale face went ashen, then grey, then nearly white as the injury was splinted and wrapped. He never made a sound, but behind his eyes a terrified child screamed loss and denial and furious supplication.
Only an arm, Zoro projected, reassuring himself as well. Not fatal. Only, maybe, to his avocation. It could be worked around. He lived, wasn't going to leave the way...
Chopper finished, finally, and Zoro caught his... the stupid idiot up, took Sanji below-decks before he insisted on walking off the shock and killed himself for real.
Behind him, Zoro heard the babbling begin.
