He had dreams.
He would open the doors, quietly, because she’d be napping as per habit in the late afternoons, and tip-toe across the hall. A flower vase, perpetually filled with fresh flowers, would sit in his room. A woman’s touch. He wouldn’t have minded.
It made the place feel alive.
Dinner-time’d always be quiet before a man crashed in noisily. She’d toss a spatula fondly at the man’s head, and order at the table would be restored, though never the peace.
Her laugh would have an edge to it. She’d married him after all. It wasn’t just sweet, but full of spice, colour and life. He imagined he’d be as everyone described him to be. Loud, a bit of an ass (a little like him). Larger than life; but, there would be a quality to his voice that Garp’s had only with Luffy.
It would have sounded special.
It did. In his dreams.
In an alternate universe, Ace would have known them.
However, in this reality, his partner, lover, would have no in-laws.
It leads them to this island anyway, where he kneels down and brushes sea-weathered knuckles across the mound of earth, wondering if they felt just like his had. He hopes it does. Just in case she misses him.
He stands.
“Hey, mom.”
In another universe, she would have said hi back.
It is when a hand rests, warm and firm, on the small of his back that Ace realises how desperately he’d wanted to hear her laugh, to hear his stories from him. He grits his teeth and looks away.
The hand on his back shifts, arms encircle his waist and lips press reassurance to his shoulder.
“I’ll take care of him, eh.”
He thinks they would have approved.
In both this universe and the next.
