Title: You Were Loved
Rating: PG (swearing)
Word Count: 300
Topic: Ace
Pairing: OMC -> Ace, implied Marco/Ace
Summary: Luffy and co weren't the only non-Whitebeard pirates who wanted to save Ace.
Warnings: Spoilers for current events in the anime (and older events in the manga)
Disclaimer: Not mine.
The Whitebeard Armada is huge, and everyone is frantic to get all of the preparations ready for the operation to rescue Ace. It's for this reason that the stowaway has managed to stay hidden for so long, but that's no excuse as far as Marco's concerned. He examines the man with irritation, "So, what are you then? A spy for one of the other yonkou? Or for the Marines?"
"Fuck you," the man snarls back.
Marco's about to order the guy thrown overboard when he pauses. "I know you, don't I?" The man stays stubbornly silent and Marco has to really think to place him. To be completely honest, he'd never have remembered him if it weren't for the current situation.
"You're one of the Spade pirates," he realises. Ace's former crew.
The man, not much more than a boy really, probably the same age as Ace himself, lets loose a string of invective, before bursting into tears.
"You took our Captain from us, you dumb bastards, you took him away and you beat us up and you kept him and then you couldn't even fucking keep him safe. Fuck you and fuck your Captain," he sobs. "I'm gonna get our Captain back and I don't give a fuck what you think. I'm gonna get him back!"
Marco stares at him a moment longer, fists clenching, before turning and stalking away. "Somebody get this damn idiot a sword and a pistol!" He bellows as he leaves.
Marco looks for the man after the battle, but it seems he's just one of the many to fall on that terrible day, and Marco realises guiltily that he never got his name.
"Sorry," he apologises to Ace's grave. "Blame it on jealousy. But you were loved, idiot, never doubt that you were loved."
A/N: Because it seemed odd to me that the Spade pirates just vanished into the mists of history like that. If they were willing to fight the Whitebeard crew to get him back, they must have loved their captain. In the backstory in my head most of them have been wiped out by now, but the few remaining helped get the one person who wanted Ace back the most onto a Whitebeard ship.

Date: 2011-01-20 09:29 am (UTC)though I don't know who did or who didn't die in the chaos of the marineford war I think some must have let their lives for his sake ;_;
eh yeah, trailed a bit off there, I originally wanted to tell you that I really liked your take on it
even though it is so unbearably sad it also has some happiness hidden in it (or not really hidden...)
because it is true that ace was loved by so many people
makes me happy to think how many (and especially who!) came to his rescue at marineford <3
