Notes: I've been so touched by the inclusion of Hannukah in this year's holiday drabble celebration. ...seriously. Thanks so much to everyone who chose to write in the Jewish faith. Nothing could have made me happier here. Finally, I have been inspired, and found the perfect way to make my addition to this year's holiday collection. It took a lot of thought, and it's to you guys, from me, with love. Happy Holidays, everyone, and may nothing but the best this world has to offer come to you all, no matter what your faith, in the New Year. Thank you once again, for celebrating diversity using our wonderful crew, and most of all, our wonderful Usopp.
EXTRA NOTE: "Shamash" is the Hebrew word for the "helper" candle, the one that lights all the others. It's the ninth candle that sits above the others on the menorah. There is no official roman spelling for any Hebrew words, so if you have seen shamash, menorah, or Hannukah spelled differently anywhere, it's nothing to get excited about. Hebrew is one of the most difficult languages to romanize.
The first candle is brown. It's a dream. It's love. It's the reason. It's the beginning.
The second candle is green. Determined and bold, never dying. Faithful and loyal. Such a strong and protective heat.
The third candle is orange. A sharp, small, neat flame, a laughing flame, which seems demure and harmless until you stick your finger into it.
The fourth candle is navy blue. Its fire is beautiful and sleek, aesthetic. It's a romantic candle; you'd put it between you and your lover on the dinner table at the cafe.
The fifth candle is pink. A soft, round little flame, with a healing warmth on the coldest, snowiest nights of winter.
The sixth candle is purple. This fire is darker than the others. It's a very still flame, until all the other candles are lit. Then... it begins to sway with the other lights...
The seventh candle is sky blue, and the flame is the happiest yellow. Even though it's one of the farthest away from the first candle, the yellow candle still feels its warmth.
The eighth candle is cream. A homey candle. A country candle. An old flame. Far, far away.
Finally, the shamash. It is red. What a big flame it has! A wild, spirited flame, very, very hot, but so joyous.
And it lights all the other candles on fire. Without the shamash, where would the other candles be?
Once all of them are lit, a large, calloused, familiar hand falls on my shoulder. With a plume of smoke, a low, slurred voice speaks.
“Why’re those things so many colors?”
“There’s a color for each miracle in my life. This is the celebration of miracles, you know.”
Warm, full lips press onto mine.
“I don’t know nothing ‘bout religion… but I guess that means I should find a way to celebrate you tonight.”

Date: 2004-12-27 04:31 am (UTC)What's the seventh candle? The sea and sky? I get the other ones, but I'm not sure about the seventh.
And I agree with Sherri, I'd love to read the unedited version.
Thanks for this!

Date: 2004-12-27 07:11 am (UTC)Also, much icon love, and I too, would like to see an extended version. ^_^ Good job with the people/feeling references- the only one I had trouble on was Vivi (felt dumb after I read your comments, though... *laughs*)- well, and his father...
