>_o I don't know what brought this on. Angsty angsty angst. I had to cut a hundred words off of this ><
He tried to convince himself that it was only a simple defeat. Perhaps more painful than any before... more humiliating than any before. But only a defeat. An opportunity to grow stronger, as long as he walked away in the end.
Too many scars to remind him. Strange scars in ugly places, thighs and back. Burns from fibers melted into his skin. Charred patches in his hair. Time healed, leaving traces, ragged lines of raised flesh. They'd left Skypeia some time ago.
He was sure the rest of the crew was none the wiser. He did his damndest not to let anyone catch on. He didn't want their inevitable pity. Best to forget it all together.
But he found these days that when a storm rolled in and electricity followed the ship between the clouds, his scars would ache, throb as though they longed to be reopened, as though their master was calling to them. It was on days like this that he couldn't keep his mind from wandering as he tried to doze.
Zoro was not a man beyond fear but it had been some time since he'd experienced such a thing. Not a fear of death or injury, but something deeper, something intangible and raw. It still made his stomach turn to think about that feeling. Those feelings -- hands too delicate and hot metal and white electricity.
Cold jarred him out of his reverie then and he looked down to find a bottle resting against his chest, pale fingers holding the neck. Sanji stood over him, leaning casually against the wall.. The cook didn't bother looking at him and Zoro wordlessly took the bottle.
Sanji's fingers trailed the very lightest over the top of his head as the cook walked away. Smoke wafted around his words. "Kuso-marimo..."

Date: 2005-02-16 12:45 pm (UTC)The line about the lightning making his scars throb was particularly descriptive. I liked it, but the thought (especially considering how many storms they get on the Grand Line) made me wince in sympathy. That's GOTTA hurt.
