Ben looked up just in time to watch Shanks climb onto the railing. As he readied himself to leap off the side, Ben managed to grab a hold of his arm.

“Just what do you think you’re doing?”

“Swimming. It’s too damn hot today.”

Ben favored him with a look and poked him in the left shoulder.

“Do you think that’s wise? It’s only been a couple months.”

“Don’t care.”

“At least wear a flotation device.”

“No. Cumbersome. And they make me sweaty.”

“Shanks…” Ben paused, not sure whether he should be asking this question. “Do you think you can still even swim?”

“Well, maybe a modified side stroke? Or in a circle or something. ‘Sides, I figure you’ll save me if I get inta trouble.”

“Oh gods…a circle.” He couldn’t help laughing. It was just stupid enough to be possible. “This I have to see.”

“Hey, it’s not that funny.”

“Oh yes it is. Give me a minute to change and we can both go swimming.”

Shanks waited until Ben had his boots off. Then he rushed him, knocking him back over the rail with a well-placed blow.

Sputtering, Ben looked up just in time to dodge the incoming life preserver.

“What the hell?”

“Jerk! I should just leave you down there, but it’s too damn hot.” Shanks vanished from view, and Ben wondered if the captain had changed his mind after all. Until he heard the yell.

“Incoming!”

He just barely escaped being sunk by a red-haired cannonball.
