Word Count: 300
Note: Not sure where this came from, although I like the idea. But I wimped out a little and made the end sappy. Sigh. I should have stopped in the middle while I was still ahead.
“Did she say yes?”
Ben nodded, the usual mixture of guilt and excitement that preceded these particular occasions already coiling in his stomach.
“You’ll have to wait until after the bars close, though. I think we both need a little liquid encouragement. Also, she doesn’t want to take the risk of anyone being out and about and recognizing her. But she agreed.”
Shanks grinned at him, a hungry sort of smile.
“That’s good. Gives me time ta polish off a few bottles myself.”
He poked the taller man in the ribs.
“Toldja she’d go for it. Those quiet ones ya like so much usually do. This is gonna be fun. She’s a real looker.”
“Mmm.” He caught the hand before it could jab him again, twining his fingers with Shanks’ just long enough for a quick squeeze.
“All the arrangements are taken care of. Just head back to the room after last call. I managed to procure lodgings directly opposite for a change.”
“Ho ho! That means ya got the balcony.”
“Indeed.” He shot a quick glance to the darkening sky, the full moon already nearly free of the horizon. “I better go and pick her up before she changes her mind. I’ll see you in the morning.”
“Yup. Have a good time! Oh, and try and make it good, ‘kay? I know ya can’t top my last performance, but a little effort goes a long way.”
“She’s not a contortionist, you idiot! Besides, I know what you like. Just don’t drink so much you pass out and miss the show.”
Shanks managed to catch him by the ponytail as he turned to leave, hauling him down a few inches. The captain’s tongue was hot, wet, where it flickered over one earlobe.
“Never have. Not for this. Not for you.”
