“I don’ get it. The cap’n suddenly hungry for a sundae with his rum?”

“What’s the matter, man?” Yassop lengthened his strides, catching up to the newest member of Shanks’ crew. Like the hapless young man, he was burdened with several brown bags, each containing necessities important to surviving on the Grand Line, i.e. liquor.

“This.” He waved the scrap of newsprint pinched between thumb and forefinger, the rest of his fingers too busy supporting the weight of glass bottles to clutch at the paper.

Yassop squinted down at the barely intelligible scrawl, definitely the captain’s handwriting. It appeared to be a grocery list, written in some haste.

“Hmm, lessee. Chocolate sauce, whipped cream, caramel, strawberries, and maraschino cherries. Yup, looks like Shanks wants a sundae too. What he do? Hand it to you right before we left?”

“Yeah. But I don’ understand. Why’s he want all that stuff without askin’ for any actual ice cream? And there’s one or two other things here that are downright weird for a sundae.”

“Like what?”

“Well, teriyaki chicken jerky for one. Or what about this? Green onions? Oh and nectarines, but you could put them in a sundae I guess.”

“That is kinda strange, even for Shanks. Jerky in a sundae? Well, orders is orders so I guess we’ll be makin’ one more stop.”

Behind them, Lucky Roux finally swallowed the last bite of the sandwich he’d grabbed in town.

“It ain’t all Shanks’ stuff.”

“What’re you talkin’ about?”

“You don’t give Beckman enough credit. The weird shit’s his. And there’s a reason why there ain’t no ice cream on the list.”

Understanding dawned on the other pirates. The newcomer just shook his head, looking a bit green, while Yassop considered the items.

“But just what d’ya do with jerky and onions?”

“Ain’t ya finished yet?”

Ben looked up at Shanks, frowning just a little.

“Hush you. You had your fun, now be patient and let me have mine. You know you like it.”

“Yeah, but…” Shanks whined, reaching down to skim a finger across Ben’s shoulder. “Mmm, chocolate. But it takes sooo long.”

“Here, have some jerky.”

He handed a big piece of teriyaki chicken-flavored jerky to the captain, sighing in relief as Shanks was forced to spend some time chewing before he could resume his pestering. He was almost finished, just a few more twists and knots to tie. That was the best thing about green onions, other than the wonderful flavor of course. The succulent stems were remarkably strong, especially when braided together. All in all, they made a fairly effective rope, as well as an edible one.

“I’m finished now. You want another piece?”

Shanks nodded. It was for the best. Experience had shown he had a tendency to get loud when Ben did this. The jerky was almost as effective as a gag in muffling his voice and much more tasty.

“Here you go.”

Ben grinned at him, tongue flicking out over his lips.

“Rub-a-dub-dub, thanks for the grub.”

The spurious blessing out of the way, he issued one quick warning before bending to his task.

“Just don’t choke, okay?”

It was a while later, the first mate having satisfied his need for onions seasoned with a very particular kind of salt, that Shanks mentioned the other food.

“’s with the nectarines?”

“Roux went along. You know how resourceful he is about food.”

“Ya think he got ice cream? I forgot ta put it on the list.”

“You know he did.”

“Mmm, vanilla ice cream with nectarines and brandy is th’ best. Hey! Wanna be dessert again?”

I have no explanation for this. It just is. Strangely enough, it makes me want some Mongolian Beef or something.
