Italics are flashbacks, but I think all of you would have figured that out anyway. My writing has been crap lately, and this is no exception, but... yeah. Trying to get back up to par.
Placement of Blame
It wasn't his fault. He keeps trying to tell himself that, but somehow the concept just slips through his fingers. It's not like him to feel guilty or have regrets, and far beyond him to blame himself for something he didn't do. But that's just it. It's what he didn't do. He may have tried, but it hadn't been enough. And he doesn't think he'll ever be able to let go of this.
It wasn't his fault.
"On the dawn of this day of January—"
He'd tried to get there in time. God knows, he'd tried. All sense told him that it was ludicrous to try for it, to give himself away, to put himself in danger, all for someone on the other side of the law who he wasn't even supposed to care about. But he couldn't help it.
It wasn't his fault.
"—and after standing fair trial—"
He'd never thought any human, not even a devil fruit user, could make the kind of noise he had when that deadly blade had come swinging down. A shriek of utter wrenching emotion, and whether it was of rage or loss he doesn't know, but he knows it was never supposed to hurt this much.
It wasn't his fault.
"—you, Smoker the White Hunter, are found guilty of extreme fraternization, and therefore treason, and are sentenced, here and now, to the guillotine."
Ace buries his face in his bloody hands.
It's always the pirates getting killed. Come on, roundabout. XD; Actually I just wanted Ace angst.

I don't think I'll ever hear the phrase "where there's smoke there's fire" without thinking of them again. ^_^
