Black and red mingled, a momentary swirl of color that reminded him of combat. He stared at the effect, mesmerized, until the darkly stained cloth swiped over his leg once more. Almost three hours in and he was still getting caught up in the mixture of ink and blood. A quick glance off to one side revealed that Ace had noticed. The pirate quirked a grin and mouthed “I told you.”

Four hours earlier, sweaty and sated, he’d watched as Ace drew random patterns on his calf.
“Definitely something with a lot of shading.”
“What?”
“I think you should get a tattoo.”
“Why?”
And Ace had grinned that grin of his.
“Trust me. You’ll like it.”

The first touch of the needle to his flesh had been a surprise. It was strange, somewhere between the first bite of a blade, a sting, and the touch of Ace’s fingers when he was humoring him and ‘forgot’ to dampen his fire. The longer the tattoo artist worked, the better it felt. Until now he was half hard, wrapped up in the sight of his own blood and the occasional spasm of his calf muscles. The low hum stopped and he was asked if he wanted a moment before starting on the shading. When he saw the three needles in the artist’s hand, rather than a single one, he shook his head.
The look he shot Ace, fingers curling tightly around the edge of the table as the room filled with a low buzz, promised the other pirate he’d be more than repaid for the money he’d spent that afternoon.
