Title: I Knew It!

Lightning split the sky, the smell of ozone strong in the air. Roronoa Zoro and Sanji both stared, mouths gaping, at the collapsed execution platform and at the young man carefully retrieving his hat. The cook took a long drag off his cigarette to settle his nerves, the smoke curling from the glowing tip suddenly thick with sulfur and brimstone. Next to him, the shining aura that had sprung into existence around the swordsman quickly bled away into the rain and fog. Neither of them said anything at first, just stood there watching the miracle that had happened. And then Zoro hissed quietly under his breath.
“I knew there was something rotten about you. What are you doing here, you shitty demon?”
“For once, the same as you.” Sanji smirked at the look of consternation that flitted across the angel’s face. “We have our own interest in keeping Monkey D. Luffy alive. Nice save by the way.” This last was said somewhat grudgingly as the blond gave the swordsman an appraising look. “A bit flashy for a guardian angel though, a bit risky. What if your aim had been off, seaweed head?”
“My aim is never off.” Zoro snarled. “And it wasn’t me. I thought it was you.”
“No.”
At Sanji’s admission, they both turned their attention back to their charge. Luffy was laughing as he fended off marine and pirate alike, seemingly oblivious to his brush with death. Angel and devil moved in tandem, flanking the would-be pirate king and hustling him away from the deadly square. More forces were at work here than those known to Hell or Heaven it seemed.

“Just what the hell was up with that, letting me go off with him alone? You beginning to trust me, angel?”
The blond devil punctuated his remark with a particularly vicious thrust, drawing a reluctant moan from the green-haired swordsman beneath him.
“Never. I just,” and it was impossible to miss the smugness in his tone, even with vocal chords straining against the screams of pleasure the devil’s actions were causing. “I, unh – harder you fucking bastard - I found out what you were up to when you vanished on the last island. You still need him alive.”
“I’m shocked you respect me enough to leave him in my care.”
“Shut up. Respect has nothing to do with it. I know what your masters will do to you if you fail.”
Claws sprang into existence at the end of the cook’s strong, capable hands. He raked them carefully down the swordsman’s spine, mindful as always of the soft wings trailing invisibly from both shoulder blades. The angel’s blood was sweet nectar on his tongue as he lapped at the swiftly healing wounds.
“Idiot. Even with that threat hanging over me, you still have to believe I’m capable of protecting him. That means you respect me.”
“I do not! It’s just that – oh God do that again – even you aren’t so incompetent as to let him die. And you didn’t. But don’t go reading anything more into it, you stupid chef. You’re still a shitty demon, and I hate you.”
A bit later, the cook perched on the end of the battered couch and sucked life-giving nicotine into his lungs. The swordsman looked, as if it could be otherwise, completely innocent and peaceful as he slept. The devil smiled and shook his head.
“Fucking angel. You’re not so bad yourself.”
