A feather tickled over shivering skin, down muscled back. Soft, fluttering, twirling against the sugar-brown skin. Traced bold ink swirls and the conch of an ear. His breath shuddered, the plane of his back rising and falling heavily. A chuckle blew soft air on his neck.
He didn't know how long it'd been. Someone, though he couldn't imagine who, must have bathed him for the ash and Vearth was gone from his skin and his hair washed. Now though a new layer of sweat gleamed on his skin.
"They're really so ridiculous. Absolutely no use at all. I cut mine off long ago. Really, I should have made the whole court do it. Oh well, I suppose it doesn't matter now." Ener laughed lightly.
Wiper heaved, the cry that bubbled from his throat mostly choked back as Ener tore free another feather, a larger one. The God, sprawled beside him on the silk and pillows where he was chained, twirled the feather between his fingers. When a crimson droplet welled from its root, he lightly touched it and licked the rusty liquid from his finger.
"No need for them now," Ener mused, that self-pleased smile curving his brows. "Not that the other one could be saved anyway. From now on, that identity no longer matters. Your race is dead. You're no longer Shandian, but simply mine just like everything in Shangri-La."
Wiper wrenched again against his chains, upsetting the small pile of downy white collecting on his back. "Bastard!" he rasped, vision blurring with the pain. "Never!" The anguished cry ripped from his lips as several were torn out at once, the hypersensitive flesh surging pain through him stronger than any of Ener's volts.
Ener just smiled his soft, wicked smile, more demon than god. "We'll see."
