It was a purely calculated move, a tactical decision. He'd never come face to face with this Portgas D. Ace but his name was not unknown -- nor were his powers. No normal human would stand a chance against him. Luckily for Smoker, he was no normal human. If he could hold off the older D long enough then there was the slim chance that Tashigi and his troops could get their hands on the younger one.
That smirk stayed strong right up until the moment it was swallowed by fire; the last thing Smoker saw was the boy's body fade into flame.
The heat, the pressure of the explosion was incredible but it didn't blow his billows away. Instead, licks of flame snaked through him, swirled hot, wild and furious. Angrily he roiled, a chase for something that couldn't be caught, that was too much a part of him now to discern one from the other. Sparks flickered through the mass that they formed, the heat and the electricity the only thing that grounded him to reality, all concept of time and space lost as they roiled, coiled, swirled.
There was no telling just what it was that spurred them to stop, separating as though for a gasp of breath. But fire recoiled from the embrace of smoke and he reeled with it as smoke became flesh.
He was sweating -- and so was the young pirate sprawled atop him. That smirk had finally been wiped away and now he stared into Smoker's face, the alley silent but for the crackle of a burning building.
"Go," Smoker finally snarled, not daring to move, to say another word.
That smile flickered back to life over Ace's freckled face and he too flickered, a flame darting down the alley as familiar footbeats approached.
