Sep. 10th, 2005 09:45 pmTitle: Innocence
Rating: PG
Word Count: 274
Pairing: Zoro/Luffy
Topic: Scars
Not enough scars, and when I showed it to my girlfriend, she suggested that maybe it needed more about the riding and less about the other stuff. I think she's right. Maybe I can write a better one later.
At first Zoro had felt guilty. Not because Luffy was the captain, neither of them were the type to get hung up over protocol, but because Luffy came across as so childlike and innocent with those big eyes and that goofy smile. As time had passed, Zoro had begun to realize how wrong that was. Luffy was innocent, but it wasn't the innocence of childhood. It was the innocence of lunacy.
He'd asked Luffy about the scar from idle curiosity, since Luffy didn't seem to form scars otherwise. Luffy had cheerfully explained that he'd gotten the scar as a child before he'd eaten the devil fruit, by stabbing himself in the cheek to prove what a tough pirate he'd make. He didn't seem even slightly aware that this wasn't normal childhood behavior; even Zoro hadn't begun injuring himself on purpose until he was an adult.
It wasn't a surprise that Luffy had always been like that, though. Zoro respected it; this was a mad time, so madmen like himself and his captain were at an advantage. And if they shattered mountains they didn't like and rerouted rivers to suit their purposes, so what? This world was for making goals and seizing them, even if the goals seemed insane. Luffy had it right. And the captain's crazed drive was what pulled others into his manic little circle of influence. Luffy was like a whirlpool who grinned as he sucked you closer to your doom. There was no choice anyhow; once the current caught you, there was nothing left but to enjoy the ride.
And Zoro had to admit it was a hell of a ride.
