Rating: PG
Pairing: Usopp/Luffy
Word Count: 203
Theme: Water
I thought this was a good theme, although I'm not sure I'm entirely happy with this piece.
He'd been watching the ocean and waiting for a long time. As long as he could remember, almost.
His mother's death was a hazy memory, his father a dream captured in photographs and stories. He was alone, so he got attention from others by telling stories about the sea, warning of pirate ships on the horizon or bragging about things he'd done past that horizon, off in the distance where everything was mystery and legend and his father was having adventures.
And then pirate ships did appear on the horizon.
It wasn't jealousy. He wasn't jealous of the other guys.
Redhair Pirates. Did his father ever stare at his sleeping captain? Suddenly feel overwhelmed with the urge to hug and kiss and strangle and drown his captain all at once, just to show he could?
They said the ocean did strange things to a man, but Usopp couldn't be that kind of man. He'd built his life, his whole identity while staring out over the waves and dreaming. It was so easy when they were on an island or fleeing Marines or chasing an enemy, but now, here...
It had to be the ocean, and he just couldn't let it get to him.
