Not a contest entry
Nov. 13th, 2005 02:12 amTitle: Wait for Me
Rating: PG
Pairing: extremely light Zoro/Luffy
Word Count: 398 (yeesh, this is a long one)
Warnings: Angsty, Character Death
It's not for the contest, although I had originally wrote it with the contest in mind. It's too long I fear, but it turned out so well, I had to share it. Or at least...I hope it did ^^'
Enjoy!
He was dying. He understood it, accepted it. Welcomed it, even, in a small part of himself that was so very tired of it all.
He had worked towards this goal, this one thing, almost his entire life. Had trained and fought and bled for it for years without counting. He felt himself older than he truly was, his soul burdened beyond it’s 19 years. And now…
Now that burden was ready to be lifted. He had succeeded. His hard work, his training, his entire life’s devotion had finally paid off. He was the greatest of them all and, if he listened hard enough, his name was heard on the very wind itself, spreading to the world, to the heavens, his name and his hard-won title.
His opponent lay beaten upon the earth some distance away. A crossing set of scars had stolen his breath and finished a battle that seemed, now, so very long ago.
His Captain stood over him, staring down at him with admiration and agony in his ever-bright eyes. His Captain, who had watched from afar as he faced his dream head on with honor and courage, regardless of the outcome. Faced it…and won. And now…
Now it was his turn to aim for a goal, to complete a dream and give an answer to a dearly held memory in a young boy’s past.
“Go on. Whitebeard’s already got a head start. If you don’t hurry, you won’t make it.”
Shuddered breaths and watery coughs couldn’t stop him. He might be dying, but he wasn’t dead yet. And he wouldn’t dare hold back any of his crewmates, especially not his Captain.
“Heh, what are you waiting for idiot? Get going already!”
“Wait for me.”
“Eh?”
An unexpected question considering the circumstances, but not unreasonable.
“I won’t be long. Just wait for me.”
“Ah. I’ll wait.”
The grin was not so innocent as that first time, when a young pirate captain stood in a marine base courtyard and asked a question that would determine the fate of both in ways neither would ever conceive.
An energetic sprint and the other was out of sight, off to finish the long road he’d traveled and take a crown he’d always been meant for. And Zoro lay their in the dirt, soaking the earth with his blood and watching the clouds overhead as they traveled by at their leisurely pace. He would wait for Luffy. In Life or Death…he would wait.

Date: 2005-11-16 11:08 pm (UTC)I must have started and re-wrote this about 5 times. I'm glad I managed to get it right. I'm tempted to write a companion piece from Luffy's POV too, but nothing's coming to me right now.
awwwwww....

Date: 2005-11-20 06:39 pm (UTC)And don't worry, I don't think Zoro minds so much considering the circumstances.
Smexing requires a courage that I don't have quite yet, but give me time and we'll see ;p
