The sound of marching feet was what woke him, but then again, he's learned to be a light sleeper.
For those who supposedly fought against the age of piracy, nothing was sacred. Knowledge was power and any information regarding the historic poneglyphs couldn't escape the wide sweeping eyes and ears of the corrupt World Government. He himself had heard tell of another pursued, a young girl, now with a bounty eightfold that of any of East Blue's most wanted.
The scholar knew now that he would not be safe in any town, anymore.
Hoisting his belongings and his rifle, he sought a hasty retreat from the inn through its back exit.
...
It was a miscalculation, really, underestimating the lone Marine posted to stand watch in the back alley. He looked small, young and a bit wet behind the ears, but it was with unexpected strength and agility that the young Marine disarmed him, driving a hard blow to the side of his head with the butt of his own rifle.
...
When he came to, he discovered his wounds had been treated. And judging by the soft sound of creaking wood and rolling waves, he gathered that he was, at least, on someone's ship.
Sitting up, he saw the same slight young Marine that had struck him, but he realized that the boy was no longer in uniform. Or had it ever been his uniform at all? He was dressed now in casual, loose-fitting clothes fit for a sailor, simple sandals and a plain straw hat that covered his headful of shocking red hair.
And it was with open, trusting eyes and an easy going smile that the boy made Ben Beckman an offer he couldn't refuse.
