He was missing something. He was an incomplete person.
A wife, a son, a house, a steady income. That was what life was built of, right? He loved his wife, adored his son at least as much as Usopp hero-worshipped him, the house was just the right size for them all and thanks to Bankiina's sense for money, they had enough money saved up for raising five more kids if they liked.
Syrup Island wasn't the smallest island in the world, or anything, but it was pretty damn small. The mansion regularly sent a ship to a nearby island's city for supplies, and would let villagers ride along if they liked. Established routes were safer from sea monsters, but in more danger from pirates. He rode back and forth on that ferry at least a million times, watching the horizon for something. But the ferry always made it safely.
Shanks was a great guy. They met in the city, while Yasopp was on a trip. Totally relaxed, great drinker. He saw Yasopp shoot--just showing off to some fellow guys--and with a laugh, clapped him on the back and said he should join them.
She said, "I want you to be happy" and "I love you" and "I'll always remember you." He hugged her as tightly as he could, kissed her and bent down to hug Usopp. He was happy because Yasopp was happy, but hopefully he'd understand someday. Men had to find their dreams.
"You ready to go?" Shanks was the captain, but he grinned over at Yasopp.
"Ready, Captain. Let's get to sea." Yasopp grinned back, and with a yell the rest of the crew went into action, preparing to send them on their way.

Date: 2005-12-07 09:14 pm (UTC)So, thank you for writing them, and doing it in such a relaxing and enjoyable way ^_^
And, of course, anything with Shanks gets bonus points!
Finally and completely off-topic: I loooooved the Vorkosigan saga. I need to go back and reread it (and make sure I spelled the name right...). I petered off reading it sometime after the one with the bugs - Butterbugs? Yeah, that was years ago. I don't remember anything other than that I loved it and there was 5-space math and an explanation for interstellar travel that actually kind of made sense. Go Bujold.
