Fun topic.
Jan. 28th, 2006 02:33 pmTitle: Reasonable Fears
One Piece: Not mine.
Word Count: 297.
Rating: G.
Pairing: Usopp/Luffy flavored.
Topic: Secret Fears.
Warning: Water 7 spoilers LIKE WHOA.
Usopp was openly terrified of many things. Dying, getting hurt, fighting, having his friends doing any of the above, mushrooms, Zoro in a temper, Sanji in a bad mood, Nami PMSing, okama wearing ballet shoes, reasonable things like that.
He’d never been frightened by Luffy.
It was funny. The Strawhat captain was insanely strong, and his rage, when he unleashed it, was terrible. He had freakish abilities that he used with consummate skill, and was a natural fighter of extraordinary aptitude. Reasonably, Luffy should have been quite scary.
But Usopp had never seen anything except love directed towards him in those wide black eyes. Love, and an unspoken promise of “I will never hurt you.”
That was why Usopp wasn’t afraid when he challenged Luffy over the fate of the Going Merry.
That was why, even injured as he was, he had fought. He hadn’t really been expecting to win, but he was making a point.
That was why, after, all other fear seemed tiny and insignificant. Months ago, he’d never have stood up to Luffy like that. Months ago, he’d never been willing to leave his nakama for the sake of what he believed. Months ago, he’d thought that Luffy was afraid of nothing.
He’d seen fear in Luffy’s eyes that terrible day. Mixed with the anger and betrayal and the love he couldn’t shake, there had been fear. Of Usopp or for Usopp, he didn’t know. Probably for him, but that fight…it had been his crucible. His old self melted away, became the raw material for something new. He was still soft, still molten under this wooden mask, still waiting to see what he would be. Enies Lobby would be his forging.
When he was finished, Luffy would have no reason to be afraid.

Date: 2006-01-29 03:21 am (UTC)That is one of the best Usopp drabbles I have ever read (don't ask me what the others were, I can't recall them right now because of you). I'm putting this in my memories. *goes to do so*

Date: 2006-01-29 08:05 pm (UTC)In the meantime, I'm in major Usopp fangirl mode at the moment, and this (http://www.ne.jp/asahi/ddworks/hinoe/illust959/onep_9_red.gif) isn't helping. *fans self*

Date: 2006-01-30 01:02 pm (UTC)Essentially, I think Usopp acts like a wuss because he got a late start on being brave (well, that and he actually thinks actions through before he takes them). I'm probably crazy. O_o
