Rating: G
Pairing: Smoker/Ace
Word Count: 206
All of his men knew about his obsession with Straw Hat Luffy. It was what had drawn him, and therefore them, away from the relative safety and routine of Logue Town onto the unpredictable waters of the Grand Line. Every morning they all held their breath with him as he opened the daily newspaper to the center and scanned the listings of pirates captured, newly wanted, or executed. And every morning there was a low sigh of relief when the captain picked up his coffee and sipped, flipping back to the front section to begin his perusal of less important news.
But it wasn’t Monkey D. Luffy’s name that he sought out first. It was another’s, a similarly irksome brat with the same dark hair, eager eyes, and large appetite for all that life had to offer. And it wasn’t under the ‘captured’ heading that he hoped to never see that name, but rather under ‘executed.’ Portgas was too clever to be held for long, but death was final. That was the one thing he’d reluctantly concluded in the deepest reaches of his soul - where the idea couldn’t escape very often to nag at him - that he didn’t want for the elder D brother.
