Obviously a Mistake
Feb. 11th, 2006 10:39 amWell, I got this idea and wrote it down, but it went way over the word count limit and didn't feature any yaoi. I thought about hacking it down and force-inserting some yaoi hints into it, but then I would've ended up with something REALLY LAME (seriously). So, I added a couple more sentences for descriptive effect (screw the word count). Enjoy.
Title: Obviously a Mistake
Rating: PG
Pairing: generic nakama-ship
Word Count: 629
Topic: Mistakes (non-contest entry)
Spoilers: The Usopp bit from Water 7 (who doesn't know about that by now?). Anyone who has read the Robin Flashback will understand her part, but there's no real spoiler here.

It was obviously a mistake to go out to sea all on his own. He couldn’t float in seawater (much less swim), and he lacked a sturdy boat, a crew, and the basic skills needed to survive the open ocean waters.
But here he is, his name spreading notoriously along the Grand Line, following along the path of the late Pirate King. With him is a crew composed of not only the best in the world (for each of their respective roles), but also each talented in more ways than one.
It was obviously a mistake to let the dumb-looking kid trick him into such a promise as to become part of the kid’s crew. Someone so simple-minded would’ve obviously been a burden to his goal of becoming the greatest.
But here he is, scarred with the promise of a future battle, and able to encounter enemies that push him to his limits and beyond. He will not die until he has fulfilled both of his promises.
It was obviously a mistake for someone like him to become a real pirate. He was, honestly, a much better storyteller than a warrior, and a slingshot is clearly not much of a weapon. Fantasies should stay as they are, just fantasies.
But here he is, rich with battle experience of the non-imaginary kind, able to hold his own against even the great future-Pirate King (for there is no doubt that Luffy will become so).
It was obviously a mistake for her to act so warmly with the threesuckers guys she sailed with. She really should have, from the beginning, made it clear to them that she was evil. Not become (if only superficially) their nakama for even that short amount a time. Those three didn’t deserve to be killed, even if they were pirates.
But here she is, her village saved and she well on her way to creating her world map. She can now freely care for others without constantly fearing for their lives.
It was obviously a mistake to take the words of two nuts seriously, especially when one nut gets his body slashed open and the other tries to destroy your home. To pursue selfish dreams was to be ungrateful to those left behind. Wasn’t that obvious?
But here he is, on the quest to find All Blue, feeling more light-hearted and confident than ever with the assurance that this is what those he loved wished for him. The presence of two lovely ladies is a wonderful bonus.
It was obviously a mistake to get the poison mushroom. The doctor was his only true friend and shouldn’t have had to die in such a way.
But here he is, arguably one of the best doctors on the globe, on a ship filled with those who accept him and make him stronger, experiencing the rest of the world beyond snowy peaks.
It was obviously a mistake to go after Crocodile instead of heading back to stop the rebellion itself. Defeating Crocodile wouldn’t have stopped the rebellion from killing, after all.
But here she is, her kingdom restored and with more people left alive than if the bomb had been allowed to go off in the middle of the city. She misses those pirates, but doesn’t regret her decision to stay.
It was obviously a mistake to reveal, out loud, that she can read the poneglyphs. For someone so smart for her young age, that was a pretty dumb move.
But here she is, alive against all odds and surrounded by such wonderful nakama that she never dreamed could ever exist for her, with whom she had gotten even closer to finding out the truth of the past than she ever imagined.
Some mistakes were meant to be made.
