I am a word nerd.

However, tourmaline also comes in every color under the rainbow, so using it as a color comparison is less than effective.
Title: Variations on Yellow
Word Count: 264.
Rating: PG.
Pairing: None. Maybe Sanji/Luffy if you squint and turn your head exactly right.
Topic: None. Bad writer.
Luffy calls it yellow, and says he likes it because it makes his favorite meat-purveyor easy to pick out in a crowd.
Zoro calls it blond, as in “dumb blond.” It is often pointed out that someone with hair the color of seaweed has little room to talk as far as hair color goes, and that point is usually followed by three more made of metal.
Chopper calls it fair, especially when fussing after Sanji to wear sunscreen.
Usopp calls it aurulent, stramineous, flaxen, and saffron, just to prove that he knows more words than most of the other people on board. Luffy winds up asking Robin what those words mean, and chanting “Stramineous!” for the rest of the day because it’s fun to say.
Sanji calls it his damn hair, and says that gold is far more precious than peridot anyway, though he neglects to mention that gold is also more expensive than the coral that Nami’s hair most closely resembles. He also hotly denies the alleged straminosity of his hair, despite not being quite sure what stramineous means. He could ask Robin-chan, but that would mean admitting ignorance in front of a lady who values intelligence. He could ask Usopp, but the sharpshooter would probably lie.
Now Luffy sings a song of Sanji’s stramineous strands while sitting on the figurehead. Usopp and Robin feed him increasingly multisyllabic words as his song goes on, and Sanji fumes quietly in French and takes out his vexation on some defenseless bread dough so that he and his very-NOT-stramineous hair can be charming for Nami-san later.
Stramineous, adj.--Chaffy; like straw; straw-colored.
Aurulent, adj.--Golden-colored. I was originally going to use auricomous, but that's better used to describe Sanji as a person than his hair.

Date: 2006-02-12 10:22 am (UTC)My only nitpick:
Chopper calls it fair, especially when fussing after Sanji to wear sunscreen.
We're describing hair, not skin right? What does fair hair have to do with wearing sunscreen? (Pardon if it's my ignorance as one who has dark hair... ^^; )
