Gin had found himself at the edge of death many times. Each time he'd managed to escape by spilling his blood and spilling the blood of others, not stopping to catch his breath until he was safe and his enemies were dead. Mercy was simply something that didn't exist in this pirates' world; you couldn't afford to give it or expect it to be given. There was only strength, the ability to defend yourself from harm.
Don Krieg was the strongest man Gin had ever known. Not one of those devil fruit users who depended on luck's hand to give them power, Krieg had made his own strength, built it through unstoppable weapons and indestructible armor. That wasn't all, either; the Don had a peculiar sort of violent charisma, all a man could want in his pirate captain, ready to award a lavish portion of the spoils to his loyal men and ready to punish the disloyal with immediate death. Krieg was the first man Gin really respected, the kind of man Gin felt he could follow past death. Ruthless, strong, brilliant, he deserved the treasures he took. A superior kind of man.
Then that blond cook had given Gin a plate of fried rice. Not because Gin was stronger or even because the cook didn't know what kind of man Gin was. Just because Gin had been hungry and needed it. For the first time in his life, instead of desperately clawing his way out of the jaws of death, someone had reached in to pull Gin out. And as Gin had sat there sobbing like a woman into his rice, the cook had turned his head away, just grinning.
