It was something of a game between them, a sort of chase vaguely resembling Tag, only without the fun. There was a different kind of prize for winning their game.
The rules were simple: catch-as-catch-can, hold for ten seconds, and above all else, keep it from the rest of the crew. Anything, anywhere, and any time otherwise was fair game, with the exception of Sanji’s “kitchen time”. “Kitchen time” was a dangerous lightning round; the results of failure were tenfold as severe, and the rewards were only just sweet enough to make it worth pursuing once in a great while. The first time Zoro tried to catch the cook off guard while he was seemingly distracted cutting the heads off the fish for supper, he discovered just how close Sanji’s dexterous hands could get a cleaver to his more sensitive parts without actually inflicting damage.
The last round’s loser was “it” of the new round, putting the winner on the defensive. Surprisingly enough, Zoro was spending a fair share of time as “it”. The catching part wasn’t hard – it was the holding that got him. Sanji was as slippery as an eel when he wanted to be, but the grip he could keep with his legs was as strong as a boa constrictor. More than once the swordsman found his arms pinned to his side by powerful, slender legs. Every time, the cook smiled at him with infuriating patience, slow and hungry as he leaned over his prey and murmured the words that signaled Zoro’s defeat.
Zoro was getting tired of hearing the honey-sweet taunt of, “Hey marimo… top this.”
