Rating: PG
Word Count: 250
Pairing: SanjixZoro
Topic: Edges
Disclaimer: Not mine.
A/N: This is a companion piece to Crush which I wrote back in April. It might be easier to understand if you read it, but it could work as a standalone too. Not to mention that almost everything in this entry was already covered by the other ones.

Zoro was a swordsman trained to read his opponent’s movements. His opponent’s mind. His opponent’s heart. So naturally, it wasn’t difficult to read Sanji when he strode into the galley – the slight droop in his shoulders, the haggard look in his eyes, the cigarette still dangling from his lips burnt all the way down to the filter. He’d been with Nami again.
Zoro stood from his chair and began to walk towards where Sanji stood, leaning against the sink but stopped, changed his mind, and headed towards the door. Then paused.
A breath.
“Cook.”
“What, Marimo?”
Another breath.
“Nevermind.”
He continued walking.
“Wait.”
Zoro turned only to find Sanji a hair’s breadth away from him, then all lips and tongue in what could have been a cruel imitation of a kiss. Sanji broke away quickly, his eyes wide, unwavering, as he faced Zoro.
“Zoro, I-“
“You need this, don’t you?”
“I-“
“Luffy always says…nakama are willing to do anything for each other…that we’ll never back down-“
“Zoro-“
“Cook.”
A pregnant silence.
“I promise I won’t break.”
That had been the first time. From then on, Sanji would seek Zoro out whenever he felt overwhelmed, confident that Zoro could take whatever he gave. But soon, even Zoro began to feel the strain of a routine that had no incentive. This love had too many edges. Harsh and unforgiving as the blade of one of his swords.
He had promised he wouldn’t break.
But he had never said he couldn’t be cut.

Date: 2006-06-22 02:37 am (UTC)I also really liked the brief and descriptions and dialogue in the middle section, especially:
"Cook."
A pregnant silence.
"I promise I won’t break."
*really hopes there will be more bits of this later*
