Usopp snagged a spanner as it spun lazily by, frowning at the mess in front of him.

“I’m sorry, Usopp. I tried to make the generator crystal last until we could make planetfall, but it burnt out anyway,” Merry’s voice chimed softly over the intercom speakers.

“It’s okay, Merry.” He patted the floor, hooking his fingers into a well-worn wall strap to keep himself from floating off. “It’s only the gravity. If a certain astrogator hadn’t decided to go for the cheap replacement part, we wouldn’t be having this problem anyway.”

“I’m sorry, Nami. Will it be expensive?”

“It’s fine, Merry,” Nami sighed, doing fuel calculations in her head as she pulled up price comparisons on a new crystal. They could afford one, but they were going to be cutting their fuel margin pretty thin afterwards.

“Perhaps if we were to spin the ship?” Robin queried softly from across the bridge.

Nami hmmed to herself and started doing new calculations.

“I’m sorry, Sanji. Are you all right?”

“Worry not, Merry-chan. Hazards of being a cook in space, and if I’d have had the pot lid locked it wouldn’t have happened.” Sanji flinched a little as Chopper sprayed antiseptic on his scalded arms before wrapping them in pseudo-skin. The gengineered reindeer nodded vigorously, winding up for a scolding…and then his nodding caused his body to wobble perilously, and Sanji had to rescue him from low orbit.

“I’m sorry, Zoro, Luffy. Are you going to be okay?”

“We’re fine, Merry! Don’t worry!” chirped Luffy. Zoro groaned, rubbed the back of his head, and tried to snag his pants as they floated by. Luffy batted them away and wrapped himself around his first mate, chuckling and murmuring, “Besides, I hear it’s more fun in zero-gravity.”

Merry politely deactivated her sensors in the bunkroom.

I'm a big giant sci-fi dork and I started out in the Star Trek fandom--I had to write Strawhats in Spaaaaace!

This came up as a weird amalgam of Star Trek, Firefly, Outlaw Star, and Cowboy Bebop for me. The One Piece universe actually translates over to sci-fi fairly well--someone on my flist had been tinkering with the idea of starting a OP sci-fi AU RPG, but I can't for life of me remember who. ^.^;

Considering the level of insanity the Mugiwara Kaizoku bring along with them.... more functional, perhaps, but highly daft. Luffy in all his permutations is a force of chaos to be reckoned with, and that tends to affect all who come in contact with him.

I think most ships function better than Holly, no offense to her... or him... actually, that really depends on which Holly, its "head" changed a few times. ^__^ But Merry is a boy for sure, I believe. Strange, considering ships are usually named after women.
