NOT Angst, for once
Jun. 29th, 2006 11:31 pmThat's write. Not Angst. No blood. No death. No sweet, sweet heartbreak. No emotional torture. No complete mindf*ck. No misery-- well, that's not quite true. Someone's pretty miserable at the end, but it's completely legitimate. Promise.

“He’s my old man!” In just four words, Sanji adopted Zeff. The startled marines, so sure they had finally captured Red-Leg Zeff, looked warily at the starved youth standing between them and the deadly –but thankfully unconscious— pirate.
“Be serious, boy,” the Sergeant stepped forward, leaning down to Sanji’s eyelevel. “We know this man can’t be your father. He’s a ruthless pirate, and pirates don’t tote their kids around at sea.” But Sanji just shook his head and tried valiantly not to cough as the marine’s cigar smoke wafted around him.
“He’s my old man,” he said as fiercely as he could, “and the only way you’re taking him away is over my dead body!”
The marine stepped back, exhaling a long stream of smoke in frustration.
“And what does your old man do for a living, eh?” He growled, noting how the boy licked his still-parched lips and seemed to think carefully before answering.
“He’s a cook, sir.” Sanji said. “And I promised him that if we got off that rock, I was going to help him open a restaurant to keep people from starving at sea. That’s not very pirate-like, is it, sir?”
“Sergeant Smoker—“ one of the other marines tried to interject, but the Sergeant just raised his hand for silence.
“Is he any good?” Smoker raised an eyebrow at the boy.
“Yes sir,” Sanji said solemnly. “Best in the world.”
“We’ll see about that.”
Years later, as Sanji laid awake in bed on the Baratie and listened to the rhythmic banging of the headboard in Zeff’s room next door, the young sea-cook wondered if it wouldn’t have been a better idea to just let Smoker arrest the old bastard and screw him in prison instead.

I'd almost completely forgotten about these scenes! Thanks for reminding me, Smoker and Zeff don't get nearly enough attention. ^_^
