“You bastard, you useless stinking bastard!!!” Ace howled as his fists pounded against Shanks’ chest. “You said you’d go after him! YOU SAID YOU’D BRING HIM BACK SAFE TO US!!!”
Shanks said nothing, his head bowed low and eyes shadowed as Ace continued to punch him and scream.
Eventually though, the strength drained out of the boy and he crumpled to the ground, tears pouring down his eyes.
“You... you were the ones... who brought the devilfruit...” Ace sobbed. “He loved you. And you... let him drown...”
Shanks bit his lip to keep from protesting that he’d tried. He’d tried. The bandits were all dead. The sea monster was dead. The villagers were safe.
And Shanks... had still been too late.
Luffy had been lost to the curse of the seas.
Suddenly Ace lurched back to his feet and grabbed Shanks’ shirt.
“You suck as a pirate,” the boy hissed. “Nobody as useless as you should be Pirate King! One day, I will have my own crew, and I’ll go to the end of the Grand Line and get the One Piece and be better than you in every way!!!”
Makino paused in her sobs as his words echoed around the village, “Ace-kun...”
“So, you’re going to be better than us, huh?”
Ace froze as the tone of Shanks’ voice penetrated, and he looked up to meet the older man’s gaze.
Water had been dripping on the boy from above for some time now. Salty water. It wasn’t all from the sea.
Shanks knelt down to meet Ace face-to-face, smiling through the tears. “Well then, do me a favour in that case.”
“Keep this hat safe for me. And when you get to Raftel, make it my offering to your brother, would you?”
A/N: *cue mad laughter* Do you know how many parts in this damn story I have now written? They're eating my brain...
