Mucho thanks to
vampire_otaku for editing this for me!

When he works on the Orbit, the other cooks call him young and foolish. Only young fools believe in imaginary seas. It was lonely.
When Sanji becomes sous-chef they still call him young and foolish. He hates it, but knows better. He isn’t alone with his dream, and one day they will prove them wrong.
When Sanji joins the Strawhats, he cries. Men don’t cry, but since the others cry too, he can let it slide.
When Sanji’s crewmates ask him to play a game he calls them immature. Inside he is secretly happy they had asked at all.
When Luffy says embarrassing things Sanji calls him an idiot, but no matter how immature Luffy can be, Sanji respects him above all others.
When he showers the girls with his loving attentions he is not being foolish, he is showing proper respect… really.
When Zoro needles him for his behavior Sanji isn’t being immature when he needles back. And if one of them starts a fight it’s not a child’s squabble. So what if it’s kind of fun…
When they fight an enemy, Sanji says he will only protect the women, because that’s what men do. When Ussop is in danger, Sanji risks neck and limb for him, because that’s what nakama do.
When the battle is over, it isn’t foolish to sit Chopper on his shoulders as he shouts their victory out to the sea. It feels good to hear everyone else shout with him.
When the enemy calls them “young and foolish” it doesn’t bother Sanji much anymore, because he knows they will prove them wrong.
When his crewmates play another game, Sanji joins them and he is welcome. Besides, being a man was easy enough, but maybe being a young fool now and then was important, too.

This is loosely based on an idea I am writing about in a fanfic where Sanji ends up possessing the mind of his 11-year-old self. Like most of the Strawhats, Sanji didn’t have a proper childhood. Yes, he probably got a lot of special treatment from Zeff, but in that environment Sanji hated that people considered him young and weak, even though he tried walking the walk and talking the talk like men do. For someone so young, I think it's sad that he wanted to grow up so quickly. At the same time Sanji can be just as childish as the rest of the Strawhats, even if he wants to seem like the mature one. And I do find it sooo cool when an enemy calls him too weak to protect anyone, because that means Sanji's going to drop kick their asses! WHOOT!

Date: 2006-07-18 11:24 pm (UTC)And on a more related-to-the-real-content-of-the-post note...
Being a man was easy enough, but maybe being a young fool now and then was important, too. Happy Sigh. I love this part of Sanji's character and the way it isn't really contradictory, even when it seems like it should be. He is both suave and silly, powerful and spineless, self-possessed and totally freaked out by turns... sometimes even at the same time. It's awesome and I love him for it.
I don't know of that was necessarily what you were going for with this drabble; but that last line had a lot of connections to Sanji's character for me. ^_^

And this... just kills me. Or something along those lines. ♥
