Title: Time and Again
Word Count: 280.
Rating: G.
Pairing: Chaka/Pell. I had to get around to writing One Piece's OTHER married couple eventually.
Topic: Time.
Time was never his friend.
Watching a princess grow up far too quickly, he’d wished the days would slow their pace a little—he wasn’t going to be able to keep her like this forever.
Watching the rainless days trickle by like sand sliding through an hourglass, he’d silently begged the merciless sun to whirl by faster, bring them closer to tomorrow when maybe, maybe the skies would smile upon them and rain down life for his beloved, dying country.
Struggling to defend Alubarna, trying to get his troops organized in the tiny fragment of time he had before the rebel army arrived, he’d clung to each minute with his fingernails, trying to get them to stretch so that he could somehow make this all stop, trying to have faith that his princess would put things right if only he gave her enough time.
A handful of seconds, a grain of sand, stole his partner, his lover, his best friend away, and then he no longer cared for time. He couldn’t cry at Pell’s memorial service, and he couldn’t cry afterwards. The ache in his heart refused to dull into acceptance or sharpen into true grief. It remained the pain of a loved one’s absence, soothed by the deep, unshakeable feeling that he’d eventually return.
But people don’t come back from being dead, no matter how long or patiently one waits, no matter how much time one spends staring into the blazing blue of the desert sky. But he didn’t grudge the minutes stolen from the chaos of reconstruction and the nonstop, now-solo protection of his royal charges.
He had all the time in the world now, after all.

And yes argh. For some reason I'm really glad you wrote this, because when I was watching the episode where Robin joined the crew and the anime MADE HIM LIVE and I was like "FUCK YOU DON'T RUIN THINGS. >O" But this drabble placates that somehow. ;__; So touching.

Date: 2006-08-13 09:50 am (UTC)I know I'm a sap. I don't care.
But seriously, this was really well done and (I think) the first PellxChaka fic I've ever seen. I've always thought they were a great pairing.

Date: 2006-08-13 10:22 am (UTC)I've actually read one rather cracky Chaka/Pell fic (on this community, actually), with Chaka manfully concealing the fact that he has a phobia of birds. XD

Date: 2006-08-13 10:59 am (UTC)Why is it that people seem to ignore the more obvious pairings, like PellxChaka and JohnnyxYosaku? (and MohjixBuggyxCabaji xD)
