Pairing: Zoro + Luffy
Rating: G
Word count: 300
Challenge: Time
The ocean always looked different from beneath the surface. The light faded away as he went deeper and deeper, and the water weighed down upon him, cold and choking. The pressure in his chest grew with every metre he descended, forcing him to expel some of his precious air to relieve the tension.
Deeper, deeper, down, down, down.
More air lost, every bubble taking away more of his time. How long had it been so far? His eyes strained, trying to make out anything in the murk.
There was something there! It was getting closer. And closer...
He flailed desperately, lungs bursting. If he could just... hold... on...
“GAH!!!” Zoro’s body practically exploded out of the water as he threw himself towards the sweet, sweet air. He promptly sank again, but only after having refilled his lungs. Kicking back to the surface, he hoisted the dead weight over his head and looked around, finally locating the Going Merry at anchor a good twenty metres behind him (what the hell? Had the others been moving the damn ship in the middle of the night again?).
He swam over to it, pausing to correct his occasional directional mishap (stupid tricky water).
He climbed aboard, dumping his “prize” and slumping down next to it.
“Yay! You got it!”
Zoro froze, and looked up to see Luffy inspecting the dripping wet spare anchor with satisfaction.
“You were down there a long time,” his Captain informed him. “I didn’t think you’d EVER come back up.”
Zoro avoided his eyes. “I was training.”
“Of course you were! Cos you’re gonna be the greatest swordsman in the world!”
Zoro nodded sharply.
It was true. He would be the greatest.
And he was going to make damn sure that Luffy was there to see it, when it happened.
