"Hey, Partner..."
Aug. 30th, 2006 09:33 amTitle: Ano, aibou...
Topic: exhaustion
Word Count: 300
Rating: PG? language, I guess
People: Sanji, Zoro
Disclaimer: Not mine. Probably just as well. Here, have them back...
Summary: After the worst battle yet, Sanji thinks back to a first time in a special relationship. Methinks he doth protest a bit much, though. ;)
Excuse: I've been watching the early episodes over again with the cubs. There's just something about first impressions.
Notes: SPOILERS for Arlong Park (um, is that really spoilers for anyone any more?).
~~~
Just another walk to the park, huh? Sure. I'm there.
I remember the first one. You didn't look too bad, when we started out. No hint of pain in your gait, in your smug smirk. Right up in the action, cool as cucumber salad on a hot day.
You knew the captain better than I, back then, knew the sorts of incredible tricks he was prone to, and... you protected me. From collateral damage, from my own half-baked rescue attempt. Fought, wounded nigh unto death, against some sword-waving sushi platter, while I got straight-armed back outside for a smoke break. When I returned, you'd already nearly collapsed.
It was only fair, that I kick that stupid manta off your back. That I take over where you were about to begin, diving in anyway. When I kicked his fishy ass outta the park I saw you smile.
And then you stood up one more time, swaying, offering me thirty seconds grace from that shitty shark I'd been keeping off you.
I shouldn't have needed it, even with my guts wrenched around and ribs still aching from my own last fight. Almost thought you'd welched on me, when that damned octopus appeared. I've learned since then you're not that kind of guy. You already had it covered.
Damn it all. I can look after myself. I can protect my nakama just fine. I don't need you. Don't need you to kill yourself looking out for me. No more than you need that from me.
But right now, I don't have anything left, not even for a pretty girl. Not like then. Couldn't dance if I had to. We look like hell, don't we?
So c'mon. Lemme help you up. Lean on me, then. Lend me that strong left arm. Let's go home.
=====
Aibou is approximately "partner", and it's how Johnny and Yosaku address each other. It's usually spelled with the kanji for "mutual" and "staff".
These lines were glorious, it's great when an author shows that these two really respect and understand each other, no matter what's happening. ^^
Date: 2006-08-30 07:56 pm (UTC)Erm. Not really? That part's a pretty direct lift of the relevant scenes from the anime (including all the sidelong looks and concerned distraction), condensed and passed through Sanji's-memories-filtering. ;) But, yes, that instinctive partnership and trust is like, *THE* reason for the pairing for me, whether it's just as nakama or more than that.
And yeah, Sanji has sorta gotten used to having the stupid green-head around by now, so, y'know, it'd suck if Zoro got himself killed doing something as stupid as trying to look after Sanji, who's quite proud of his ability to look after himself, y'know?
I guess for me it's hard *not* to show that, because it seems very clear that they just *DO*. :)
And your praises still don't make me the slightest bit happy!no subject
these were my favourite lines too! The first-person narrative here really does help to fill in the blanks in those scenes.
