“My captain…was a king, too,” said Mihawk.
Zoro stumbled slightly, a tribute to the man he once was. He didn’t like it. Rather, he wasn’t sure which he despised more- being weak and useless, or being so strong there was no weakness to fall back upon when the battle was over, if it ever was.
“He was a great king,” Mihawk said, coughing black blood messily onto Kuina’s blade. “…My king. You, boy, are you ready to-”
He couldn’t hear anything. The silence was deafening. He pulled the Kitetsu from where it was lodged in the Greatest Swordsman’s left arm, causing the darker man to stumble backwards and award him with another shower of blood. Somehow, he had imagined himself to feel something more than nothing at the end.
The hilt of the blade that cut men like bullets as they flew was thrust into his hand. He felt its thirst, its greed, its horrible indifference and its curse stronger than even the third generation.
“I have no more reason to live, defeated.” Mihawk paused, perhaps tasting sweet air for the first time. “…Kill me.”
Someone, far away, was crying for him.
“Kill me. Kill me and feel the curse of the Greatest Swordsman- to wander, alone and without your King. Yearning as the sword yearns for blood for the day when you, too, can be killed.”
It was the first time that anyone could remember Zoro crying out for his captain while waking from sleep.
