It was supposed to be black.

Longer too.

Luffy couldn't stop staring. Ben's hair was supposed to be black and slick looking and in a ponytail and his eyes shouldn't be so tired and this isn't how things are supposed to be because pirates aren't supposed to get old or at least not turn into old people and--

Shanks was laughing and it was really loud.

Luffy hadn't heard what was funny and felt like nothing should be funny anyway. He saw Shanks clap his hand against his first mate's shoulder and then, in a parody of subtlety, bring his fingers to the back of Ben's neck.

Where the hair was cut short.

The hair that wasn't black anymore.

Ben gave Shanks a look Luffy had seen a million times back when Ben had a black ponytail like he was supposed to. The "not in front of the kid we have to set an example what are you thinking" look.

Shanks rolled his eyes. And Ben didn't really actually seem to mind when Shanks pressed a shameless kiss to the temple opposite that new scar, even if he did immediately raise a "what are you looking at kid" eyebrow at Luffy watching across the room.

Luffy who was still staring. And smiling.

Zoro would look pretty cool with grey hair someday.

I couldn't decide whether to put Luffy/Zoro under pairing, since it's not necessarily there except... it totally is. So let me edit that.

I thought this might end sadly (OP characters aging always make me sad in an abstract way anyway...) but it was really quite cute. ^^

I liked the emphasis on Luffy's surprise and almost confusion while Shanks and Ben acted just the way they always had. And ZoLu at the end! Yay!

To my mind, Shanks/Ben isn't a pairing, it's an institution. They are the closest to an old married couple any pirates are ever likely to get and noone can convince me otherways.
