In Black And White
Sep. 8th, 2006 12:18 amGot mugged by plotbunny early in the week, this time. Though with a topic like "black", how could I not?
Title: In Black And White
Topic: Black
Word Count: 299
Rating: PG-13
Pairing: SmokerXAce
Disclaimer: Apologies to Eiichiro Oda, who rightfully owns One Piece
The lights are off when Ace slips into Smoker’s office, a flash of fire lighting up the otherwise dark chamber. Smoker is at his desk, head resting against his folded hands, gaze focused on the papers before him. His posture is one of bone-weariness, though the pirate sincerely doubts it will last. It never does.
“Not tonight, Portgas.” Smoker growls without deigning to look up. Ace pouts accordingly, slipping around behind him and smiling into his lover’s shoulder.
“But Smoker-taisa…” he purrs, and is shocked when the gruff captain abruptly twists away and strikes him.
“Get the hell out of here before I arrest you, damn pirate!” Smoker snarls with a vehemence unusual even for him. Ace is surprised, because even with as rough a lover as the marine is, he has never hit him like that. The captain’s expression darkens further, as if Ace is anathema to his very existence, before he storms away and leaves a very confused and somewhat hurt pirate at his desk.
Ace looks down, seeking a cause for his lover’s black mood, and discovers it. On the desk are eleven black envelopes, waiting to be sealed. Inside of each is a stiff white parchment.
Dear Mrs. Kusanagi
We regret to inform you that your son, Able Seaman Kusanagi, has fallen in the line of duty defending against the pirate scourge…
Ace refolds the paper solemnly. Each letter is the same: someone’s son, someone’s husband, is never coming home.
Smoker writes each letter himself, in large, clear script. He is The Captain, and as each of his men’s lives is his responsibility, so are their deaths.
Ace leaves silently, now understanding. Some things, like the two of them, aren’t as simple as black and white. Some things, like the letters on the desk, are.
End
