Notes: This little piece of Greek mythology always made me terribly sad.
Don't turn back...
The walls were wet; water slipped, source-less, through cracks in the stone. He took each step with purpose, leaving footprints she was sure to follow.
You must believe... not with your eyes.
But he couldn't hear her footsteps. He couldn't even hear his own.
Believe with your heart.
What if she'd fallen behind? What if she'd lost the way, if the path he blazed up the spiraling stairs wasn’t clear enough? What if something still clung to her ankles, pulling her back? What if she was hurt? What if beneath the terrifying silence, she was screaming his name, pleading with him to turn back, to help her, to take her hand?
Don't look back…
But how could he trust promises whispered from the mouth of Death?
He turned.
And for the briefest moment, he saw her. Dark hair, pale skin, not even yet a woman, but so strong... And wide wide eyes full of angry tears.
Her fingers crumbled away to ash before he could reach them.
***
Zoro opened his eyes to eerie ocean moonlight slinking through the porthole window.
“What is it?” a sleepy voice breathed warmth into his ear.
For a long moment, Zoro said nothing, just stared up into the dark of the room, surprised to feel the wet on his cheeks.
”...I looked back.”
“Idiot,” a slender thumb reached to trace the hard line of Zoro’s cheek, pretended not to feel the tears that slickened his touch. “Hasn't Luffy taught you anything? Always look forward.”
It was a kindness that would never be offered in the daylight. But Zoro took it for what it was and the truth that went with it.
Looking forward didn't mean forgetting, after all. He still had promises to keep.

Date: 2006-09-24 11:28 pm (UTC)Me too. ;____; What myth is this based on?
But even if I don't know what's going on, this is very beautiful and sad. Zoro's uncertainty in the beginning is very touching. Plus, I love the ZoSan in the second half and how Sanji doesn't mention Zoro's crying. ♥
