Title: The Last Flight
Rating: G
Word Count: 300
Pairing: Chaka/Pell
Topic: Myths
Notes: This is one of my all-time favourite myths. I couldn’t not write about it.

"...and his wings fell apart and he fell into the sea."

Chaka turned to look at his friend, who was clutching a thick book in his arms and shaking. He knew Pell had never been able to swim and that after eating the Devil's Fruit he'd been deadly afraid of the sea. Stories like the one the younger boy had just recited couldn"t possibly be making things any better.

"Did you read that from the book?" The answer was obvious, but he needed to hear it.

Pell nodded. He looked like he was about to cry. Whoever had given him that book, Chaka decided, was an idiot who had no idea of the damage it was capable of doing.

"I don't think you need to worry," he said, trying to sound as reassuring as possible, "'Cause your wings won't melt off no matter how hot it gets, and there's not much sea in Alabasta for you to fall into, anyway."

Pell looked up, "Are you sure?" He didn't seem too convinced, but at least he wasn't blinking back tears anymore.

Chaka smiled. "Yeah! And even if you do fall into the sea, I can still swim. I'll come fish you out."

---

During the long, lonely nights that followed the explosion, Chaka often found himself staring at the dark sky wide awake, thinking about a conversation from over two decades ago. He couldn't help but think that in some bizarre sense, the myth had happened to Pell. It didn't matter if his flight had been cut short by a bomb instead of the Sun, or if the sea beneath was that of sand and not water.
Pell had fallen somewhere Chaka wouldn't be able to "fish him out" from, even without the curse of the sea on both of them.

I loved the Chaka-Pell interaction, connecting them with this myth was a great idea. Plus, Chaka comforting Pell makes me happy.

And the picture is ADORABLE. Young!Pell is so cute!

Awww, sweet. We don't get enough of this pairing. And the inclusion of the Icarus myth was brilliant in this case.

(Haha, your icon kills me. DED. XD)
