His dream of sea and fish had lingered since he'd first heard the story in childhood, the paradise of endless food reinforced by hunger trauma. He was always swimming effortlessly, almost flying, inhaling the water like air. As he grew older, he realized he didn't want to be alone in his paradise. The water giggled, delicate women with cerulean tails easing past him, hair streaming with sunlight filtered through waves. They drifted just out of his reach, teasing, his fingers brushing the delicate tail fins. Around them, the fish danced in schools, lighting the sea with their shining scales.
And then, one night, there was a grinning black-haired boy swimming beside him, mouth gaping wide with awe at a passing animal. He gestured wildly at another past Sanji, then laughed, his voice rising in bubbles.
The sea embraced Luffy in the dream, and Luffy swam like a fish, like the mermaids, as he would never swim in the waking world. Together they explored, the cook and his gourmand, until it was time to prepare breakfast and Sanji woke.
Sanji had never talked to the others about his dreams. Sometimes, though, when Luffy caught his eyes across the table and grinned, he had the lingering feeling that Luffy knew he'd swum with Sanji in All-Blue.
