Life in Blue Sea wasn’t so bad. He had a new goal, a new friend, and he was learning all manner of new things. The only part that was missing was, unfortunately, the most important part. Gedatsu didn’t think he’d like it down here, but the mere thought of him was still enough to make him go blind with love.
“Gedatsu, you can’t see if you roll your eyes back into your head like that. And be careful with that pickaxe.”
Yes, love. Love that hurt like a pickaxe to the foot.
He wondered, sometimes, where Ener was, what he was doing without his loyal priests. Maybe he’d finally set off for his land of dreams, the shining orb in the sky that had always transfixed him, made his skin glow with light that, for once, wasn’t accompanied by all of one’s hair standing on end and the feeling that one should perhaps find something large and insulating to stand behind. Yes, he was sure that Ener was there even now.
Gedatsu, for his part, rather missed the more intimate, far closer, and much easier-to-reach “land of dreams” that his god had shown him, but he’d lost his grip on that when he’d failed Ener and tumbled from the sky.
Maybe his god would decide that Blue Sea needed some dreams and discipline. Maybe he’d grant them a heavenly visitation, trailing streamers of glory and lightning, and find his most beloved priest waiting patiently for him.
A man could dream. In the meantime, he would try his hardest to make his more immediate dreams come true, and draw strength from his memories. Strength to dig the strange, heavy soil here. Strength to overcome the thick air. Strength to help his friend.
Strength to overcome that inexplicable pain in his foot.
