It was the smell that tipped him off as he neared his cabin. Only one person in the entire world could get Marine coffee to smell (and, even more impressively, taste) that good, and Smoker had no idea whether it was some weird side-effect of the boys devilfruit powers or some sort of pirate secret.
(And if it was the latter, he was just going to have to intensify his pirate-hunting until he found out the trick for himself – why should they get all the decent coffee?)
“What are you doing here, Portgas?” Smoker growled, closing and locking the door behind him.
Portgas D Ace grinned at him unrepentantly from where he sat on Smoker’s bed, and held up a mug. “I needed a coffee fix!” He announced cheerfully. “After all, it’s cold and dark outside, what if I fell asleep out there?”
“You fall asleep EVERYWHERE,” Smoker growled, and proceeded to pour himself a large cup of the (damn good) coffee. “You...”
Soft snores emanated from the bed.
“Very funny, Portgas.”
The ‘sleeping’ boy snickered quietly and then opened his eyes to gaze at Smoker. “What, I’m not welcome?”
Smoker stared at him for a long moment.
“How the hell do you get the swill we serve here to taste so good?”
Ace winked. “Pirate secret.”
“Right. Then you’re not going anywhere.” Smoke billowed and curled around the boy, and he relaxed into its grip as Smoker finished his coffee quickly. “We are officially in interogation, now.”
“Damn, guess I’m caught.”
“Better believe it,” Smoker grunted, and moved closer. “I’m going to find out how you do this, or kill you trying.”
“Promises, promises.”

The next morning a fresh pot of coffee was waiting for Smoker when he awoke, with a note attached.
“Maybe next time.”

Close But No Cigar - Thomas Dolby
You came close
Close but no cigar
You didn't miss by far
You know you came this close
Close but no cigar
Some people sing love songs
Everybody's got one
This isn't my love song
It's more like my love gone wrong song...
She came to breakfast
And stayed a week
But the lie detectors
Broke down each time she tried to speak
Broke down when she said :
“You came close
Close but no cigar
You didn't miss by far
You know you came this close
Close but no cigar
No matter where you are
You know you came this close
Close but no cigar”
I remember - I remember - I remember
The promise in your eyes
As black as the night I drove you to the airport
And I remember - I remember - I remember
The wide Brazillian sky that swallowed you
Then I hit thirty
Guess I can't complain
But I must have been lonely
The night I bumped into Lorraine
She came for coffee
And stayed all night
But the lie detectors
Broke down every time I tried to smile
Broke down like the story of my life
And each dream I missed by half a mile
Broke down when I told her:
“You came close
close but no cigar
You didn't miss by far
You know you came this close
Close but no cigar
No matter where you are
You know you came so close
Close but no cigar
You didn't miss by far
You know you came this close
Close but no cigar
We're better off by far
But you know we came this close
Close but no cigar”
I really wanted to work the “close but no cigar” phrase into the story, but every time I tried it came out really “off”, and since coffee had taken over the story as the main issue, rather than the cigars, I wound up just leaving it out. Sigh. I don’t even like coffee (or for that matter, cigars, but meh).

XDDD Excellent question dodging. He's just lucky Ace lets you get away with it. He's extra lucky Ace makes good coffee and might someday share the secret. It's cute to see some lighthearted stuff for this pair. ^^ (woah... crazy deja-vu replying to this... weird)
