Ace ran his hands over soft, beaten leather. His eyes crinkled gently in a smile, merry crow's feet decorating his tanned skin. Grey streaked hair shifted in the breeze, held lightly by a faded orange hat. He pressed his nose into the dark fur, the sea of memories rolled gently, his breeches tugged by surf. He inhaled lingering scents of tobbaco and him. The warm embrace of the jacket left the cold grasp of the sea ineffective.

Hina regarded the fallen youth, eyebrows drawn. Her weight pressed warningly across his knuckles, painted lips tight in a frown.
"Son, fear is the heart of love."
Ace stiffened, staring up at her, uncomprehending, until he saw His face, half turned away. He glanced back to Hina to speak. The words died as he yanked his hand back, escaping in a burst of flame. His profile etched into Ace's memory, lingering like a wisp of pungent smoke.
Ace returned late to the cabin, wordlessly easing His tension, sinking against his back. Arms wrapped tight, Ace stayed, the clenching in his own chest faded with the gloved hands stroking down his temples and to his shoulders.

The undertow beckoned, Ace's smile never slipping even as the cannon fire blazed above him. The sleeves filled with warmth, blue closed over his head, adventure worn shoes easing him through each pulse of water. All traces of light faded, a hand clasped tight around his own. Ace felt lips across his own, sea salt and smoke caressing tenderly. He smiled then, though Ace felt it without even sight, that simple comfort cloaking him in peace.
