Title: Training
Rating: G
Word Count: 184
Pairing: ZoLu-ish
Topic:Second Best

1002...1003...1004

Had to train. Had to get better.

1018...1019...1020

Couldn’t be second best. Promised Luffy.

1040...1041...1042

No, that wasn’t right.

1050...1051...1052

He’d promised the goddamn Pirate King.

1074...1075...1076

And he’d never be second best again.

1092...1093..10-

“Hey Zoro! Come play with me? Please? You never play anymore.”

“Can’t. Training.”

1100...1101...1102

Even if that meant pushing away the first friend he’d made in years. Even if that person looked at him so sadly now. Even if that person no longer turned to him for comfort, he’d train.

1120...1121...1122

In fact, he’d train harder, because that was the only thing he knew how to do to make that person notice him. He didn’t know hugs or sweet whispered words in the dead of night, all he knew was lifting the weights so when the end of their travels came he would be able to save that person from anything. And so maybe he could be first in that person’s heart, rather than tied in second with five others.

No, that wasn’t right. / He’d promised the goddamn Pirate King.

Those lines were particularly strong. As was 'tied with five others'. Zoro, you adorable, non-communicative moron...but I also understand him, the way you write him here.

Ohhhhh Zoro, you FUCKTARD. ;__; That's - that's just so PAINFUL. The last line especially. It's that kind of overwhelming bitter envy that eats you up and Zoro doesn't want to play anymore and arghargh, it's right, you know. They say Zoro changed so much after his fight with Mihawk. ;___;

He’d promised the goddamn Pirate King.

This kind of summarizes his devotion to his captain. And I know my current icon isn't appropriate if you take into account that it's Nami, but let's pretend it's Luffy shaking Zoro around for a bit. ;__;

T______T b

;________; Awwww....

And I'd never realized it but... it kind DOES fit. Zoro seemed so lighthearted for the first while, but then gets more serious and distant. I'd always looked at it as "Luffy has Usopp then later Chopper to play with so he doesn't have to drag Zoro into whatever" but... Zoro training for Luffy in part because he doesn't want to be "tied for second" with the rest of the crew is such a sad yet understandable interpretation.

Ouch. This seems so very likely and so like Zoro, to take solace in what he CAN do, in striving even if it means pushing everyone else away, so he can prevent what he can't. And that last line...wonderful and painful.
