Luffy watched Zoro.
He watched him laugh and joke around. He watched him sleep, he watched him eat, in the dead of night he watched his eyes reflecting the stars when they stayed up way past when Nami said to go to bed.
He watched his blood pour into the ocean. It reminded him of Shanks, someone else who got hurt because they knew him. Granted, knowing Zoro it would have happened eventually, but he would have been more ready.
Or at least that's what Luffy thought when he watched the older man straning to hold weights that rightfully should have sunk the ship by now. If he’d never met Luffy, he would have waited to meet Mihawk. He would have been stronger already. He wouldn’t have lost. Or at least not as badly as he did.
Luffy watched Zoro disappearing. He didn’t know who was here instead, just that the Zoro that first joined his ship, the one that stayed up late talking and tickling, was gone.
Luffy wondered if it was because he’d been a bad captain who’d let his crew go against someone they had no hope to defeat. He wondered if Zoro had put everything, even Luffy himself, into second place behind getting better to beat Mihawk.
It hurt if he did, but Luffy wouldn’t stop him. It was Zoro’s dream to stop being second best after all, and hadn’t he said the pirate king needed the world’s best swordsman? But that didn’t mean he couldn’t wish to himself that he was first in Zoro’s heart.

......that's pretty much my reaction. I was so happy to see a continuation and I was hoping this would maybe involve some kind of talking or realization or happier conclusion. But no. You just made it more painful. ;__; Quite a lovely drabble though.
"Luffy watched Zoro disappearing. He didn’t know who was here instead, just that the Zoro that first joined his ship, the one that stayed up late talking and tickling, was gone." This line hurts. And the end hurts even more. BOTH OF THEM IN SUCH PAIN DUE TO A FAULTY UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT'S GOING ON. OH IT HURTS.

Date: 2006-10-10 05:41 am (UTC)*....drags bleeding self over* Nggh. Luffy, you said you wouldn't get in the way of Zoro's dream. But he's your nakama first and foremost and at the rate Zoro's going, he's not going to make it unless YOU SLAP HIM UP AND AROUND THE ASS AND TELL HIM TO LIGHTEN UP SOME. ALL WORK AND NO PLAY AND ETC. ;____;
