Second To Nothing
Oct. 10th, 2006 10:29 amThe really sad thing is, this is my second best plotbunny for this topic. Someone else had the same idea and got theirs finished before mine. ^^; Probably OOC like Whoa. I apologize profusely.
Title: Second To Nothing
Topic: Second Best
Word Count: 295
Pairing: Smo/Ace
Rating: PG
Fire-Fist Ace would hang in the morning, and Smoker the White Hunter would be given a commendation for his assist in the capture of the dangerous pirate.
It wasn’t supposed to be like this. The absurdity of the situation was not wasted on the captain as he strode down the hall so purposefully that the guards on duty didn’t dare ask him if he had clearance to be there.
Ace sat in the cell calmly, but he smiled slyly when Smoker appeared.
“Did you bring my last meal, taisa? Or just… dessert?” His joke was strained, proof that he was having doubts of his own escape. The marine said nothing, but opened the cell door and stepped inside. “Are they all right?”
It took him a moment to remember the children that the local captain used as bait to trap Ace, a trap into which Smoker had inadvertently driven him. It sickened him, what the ambitious man would do for a promotion, even more so than his slimy chuckle, “Well now, I suppose you’ll be the second greatest pirate hunter. Don’t worry, I’ll put in a good word for you.”
“They’re fine.” Smoker grunted “Portgas…”
He laid his cigars on the bench and kissed the pirate, brief and chaste. There was something of an apology in the kiss, sorrow and regret bound carefully under anger and frustration.
It wasn’t supposed to be like this. Marines were not supposed to be using innocent bystanders to get pirates to surrender. No one so amoral should capture Fire-Fist. He wouldn’t be second best to corruption.
His still smoldering cigars lay, seemingly forgotten, in the cell as he stormed back to his ship.
He just hoped Ace remembered to take the lock picks hidden in the tobacco with him.
End

Date: 2006-10-10 11:15 pm (UTC)What I nice ending. I thought Smoker would actually just let him be turned in. But a good one. I'm a sucker for happy endings.
