Oct. 10th, 2006 01:31 pmOf the many Merry/new ship idea's that bombarded me after I stopped crying at read 430, this one actually fit the topic (so was finished in a relatively timely manner...)
Title: Coming to Terms
Rating: G
Pairing: Faint ZoLu
Topic: Second Best
Word Count: 300 (cut a bit; oh well)
He gazed out over the darkened waters without really seeing; he had spent his time on deck considering many things. A hand caressed the smooth wood of the railing, taking in subtle patterns at length before he spoke.
"I'm sorry." Luffy finally sighed, gazing over their new ship, and trying so very hard not to think of their old. "This isn't fair to you; it’s not your fault we loved Merry first, or that he got hurt and—“ he stopped short, choking off the rest and taking a moment to reorder his thoughts.
The more he had dwelled on it, the more guilty he'd felt. They'd all done it- let the resignation leak through; not maliciously, but they were still mourning- it still hurt, and it was hard to think kindly of a replacement to anyone so loved.
“...it'll be ok” he finished, patting the wood then, as if comforting it, "give them time; we'll love you as much as we did Merry- just different."
Content now, and feeling slightly less guilty, Luffy turned to resume his post, only to be startled by Zoro’s presence.
"Do you think..." he fidgeted anxiously, “do you think it understands?”
There was a long pause, before the swordsman replied, "It will."
At the answering smile, he added, "Go back to bed, I'll take over your watch."
The captain nodded, and left. It took several minutes before Zoro moved to Luffy’s abandoned position; hand reaching out, almost of its own accord, and hovering for a long moment over the railing- gritting his teeth, finally, he awkwardly patted it, much as Luffy had, before gruffly adding, "He's right, you know...", and stalking off as if it had never happened.
The next day saw the smoothest sailing they'd had since setting out in the new ship.

Luffy: Of what?
Patient: Apples. They try to eat me.
Luffy: Okay. We will have to go through open-heart surgery.
Patient: WHAT!
Luffy: *Sighs deeply* If you are not willing to risk your life to get rid of this problem, then you will never attain your goal.
